Google Business Profile not showing up? Six reasons and the fix for each
Updated September 15, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer
When a Google Business Profile does not show up, the cause is almost always one of six things: it is not verified yet, it is suspended, the name or address breaks a rule, there is a duplicate listing, you are searching from somewhere outside your service area, or the profile is simply too empty for Google to rank. Check them in this order. The first two account for most cases.
1. Verification never finished
Sign in at google.com/business and open the profile. If you see a banner asking you to verify, nothing is public yet. Postcards get lost; codes expire. Request verification again and take the fastest method offered (video or phone beats mail). Fix time: minutes to a week.
2. The profile is suspended
Suspended profiles vanish from search without an email in many cases. Sign in and look for a red or yellow notice near the top of the profile. Common triggers: extra words in the business name, a virtual office or PO box address, a category that does not match the business, or multiple profiles for one location. Fix the cause first, then use the reinstatement form in Google's business help center. Fix time: days to weeks, and appeals with a clean profile succeed far more often.
3. The name or address breaks a rule
"Joe's Plumbing, Best in Denver 24/7" is a suspension waiting to happen. The name on the profile has to match your sign and your website, with nothing added. The address has to be a place you operate from; if you work from home, hide it and set a service area instead. Change the name back to the real one and save. Fix time: minutes, plus a possible re-verification.
4. There is a duplicate
Search your business name and your phone number in quotes on Google Maps. If two listings appear for one location, Google may be showing the other one, often an old unclaimed listing with wrong hours. Claim the duplicate through "Own this business?" and mark it as a duplicate, or use "Suggest an edit" to report it. Fix time: days.
5. You are searching from the wrong place
Google shows local results based on where the searcher is. Searching from your shop for "plumber near me" shows your neighborhood's results. Searching from a town forty miles away, outside your service area, may not show you at all, and that is correct. Test with a private browser window for your business name plus city. If that finds you, the profile is fine.
6. The profile is too empty to rank
A verified profile with no hours, no photos, no description and two reviews exists but sits below every complete competitor. It shows up for your name and not much else. The fix is the boring one: fill in hours, phone, website, a two sentence description with your city, ten real photos, and start asking for reviews. Fix time: an afternoon, and Google responds over the following weeks.
If none of the six apply
Search your business name in a private window on both Google Search and Google Maps. Google sometimes shows a profile in one and not the other while it processes changes. Give edits three to five days before assuming they failed.
