Can you get a Google review removed? What actually works

Updated September 15, 2026 · 4 min read

The short answer

Google removes reviews that break its rules: fake reviews, reviews about the wrong business, spam, conflicts of interest, and reviews with hate or harassment. Google does not remove reviews because they are negative, unfair or one sided. If your review breaks a rule, report it and expect days to weeks. If it does not, your best move is a short calm reply, because future customers are the real audience.

Step 1: Decide which kind you have

Read the review once more, slowly. Does it describe a visit that never happened, or a business that is not yours? Is it from a competitor, an ex employee or someone with a personal grudge? Does it contain slurs, threats or private information? Those are reportable. A real customer who had a bad day and wrote about it is not, however wrong they were.

Step 2: Report it

Sign in to the account that manages your profile and open your reviews. On the review, use the three dot menu and choose "Report review". Pick the reason that fits. Google reads the report and decides; there is no appeal to a person at this stage. Removal, when it happens, takes days to weeks, and Google does not always explain a no.

If the first report is declined and you are certain the review breaks a rule, Google's business help center has a form for a second look on a review you already reported. Search the help center for "manage reviews" to find the current form.

Step 3: Reply, whether or not it comes down

Every reader of that review will also read your reply, and what they are reading for is your temperature. Three parts, four sentences at most: acknowledge, state one fact, offer to make it right offline.

"Sorry we missed the mark on timing that day. We have changed how we schedule Fridays since then. If you will give us another shot, email me directly and I will take care of it."

For a review you believe is fake: "We have no record of a visit under this name. If you were a customer, please contact us directly so we can make it right." Then stop typing. Never argue, never name the customer, never post details of their visit.

Step 4: Bury it with real ones

One bad review among twenty recent good ones is a detail. One bad review that is also your newest review is the headline. The fastest recovery is fresh reviews from happy customers, asked one at a time with your review link. That takes a week of asking, not a lawyer.

What does not work

Paying a service that promises removal. Threatening the reviewer. Leaving fake positive reviews to balance it. Deleting your profile and starting over (the reviews follow the business, and the new profile starts with zero). All four make it worse.
