Google Business Profile for plumbers: the fifteen minute version
Updated September 15, 2026 · 4 min read
The short answer
A plumber's Google profile has one job: when someone with water on the floor searches "plumber near me", show them a real business that will answer the phone now. Five settings do that work: service area instead of a street address, the right categories, a phone someone answers, hours that reflect when you actually take calls, and photos of the work. Fifteen minutes covers all five.
1. Set a service area, not a storefront
Most one truck plumbers work from home. During setup, choose the option to hide your address and list the cities or zip codes you cover. Google shows you on the map for those areas without putting a pin on your house. List the areas you will actually drive to on a Tuesday night, not the whole state; Google trusts a tight, honest area more than a sprawling one.
2. Get the categories right
Primary category: "Plumber". Add secondary categories only for what you truly do: "Drainage service", "Water heater installation and repair", "Gas installation service", "Emergency plumber" if you take emergency calls. Each category is a search you can show up for. Categories you do not serve produce calls you cannot take.
3. The phone that gets answered
Use the number that rings the phone in your pocket. If a call goes to voicemail at 8pm, the caller is already dialing the next plumber. If you cannot answer on jobs, a call answering service or a "text me" line on the profile description is better than silence.
4. Hours that match how you work
If you take emergency calls, set hours to reflect it, and use Google's "open 24 hours" option only if you genuinely answer at 3am. Otherwise set real hours and write "emergency calls answered" in the description. Set holiday hours in advance; the day before Thanksgiving is when pipes go.
5. Photos of the work
Ten photos from your phone: the truck with your name on it, you at a job, a water heater install finished clean, a before and after of a repair (with the homeowner's OK in writing), your tools laid out. Stock photos of a smiling man with a wrench cost you trust in the first second. Real photos of real jobs earn it.
The line in the description
Two sentences: "Licensed plumber serving [your areas]. Repairs, water heaters, drains, and emergency calls answered." That sentence does more than a paragraph about quality and integrity.
Reviews are the tiebreaker
Two plumbers show up. One has four reviews from 2023. The other has thirty, the newest from last week, each with a short reply. Ask every satisfied customer for a review with your Google review link, at the moment the water stops. That is the whole review strategy.
What this guide does not cover
A complete Google profile is one of ten checks in the free Bearlo scan. The scan also looks at your hours, your photos, your reviews and whether your website and phone match your profile. Enter your business name and city; every result is shown, pass or fail.
